Our Questions

1. How do skeleton sliders gain so much speed?
2. What is most aerodynamic position when you slide?
3. What is the least aerodynamic item the sliders wear?

Research Notes for Shannon

-The law of moving segments states that the more number of moving segments that you get behind a force, the more power there will be in the action.
-So this means that the more a skeleton athlete leans into a curve, the faster they are going to go.
-The skeleton athletes put oil on the steel rods on their sled to reduce friction.
-The most resistant stance is toes pointed up, their arms ontop and palms facing up, sitting position, and having their chin far away from their neck. (this is a bad postition)

-The sliders suit, helmet, and shoes are made to be at light and the sled heavy.
-Skeleton is the world's first sliding sport.
-It originated in the Swiss town, St.Moritz
-The first competition of skeleton was in 1884 and the winner got a bottle of champaine.
-Skeleton got its name in 1892 because the sled looked like a skeleton
-It is illegal to heat the metal rods on the sled because if they are heated, it increases the speed at which they
can go.
-So, the temperature on the sled rods is taken before they can compete.
-The average track is 1,500 metres long
-The track has refrigerated ice surface
-There is a maximum weight limit for Skelton competetors and sled because the heavier weight, the faster
you will go.
-Top speed is above 135 kilometers per hour
-The slider has to not steer too hard because they will skid
-The slider has to not steer too slow because they will recieve a bad time
-They memorize the track and study every turn
-The athletes look for the shortest route down the track to acuire the fastest time.

  • In the 2010 olympics, the gold medalist in the women's skeleton was Amy Williams of Britain
  • The gold medalist for the men's skeleton was Jon Montgomery of Canada
  • Jon Montgomery's time was 52.36 seconds for heat four
  • Amy Williams' time was 54 seconds even for her heat four
  • Was first raced at the olympics in 1928 and 1948 then appeared permanently in the 2002 olympics
  • Skeleton boards are made of fiberglass and metal
  • To start, the rider grips the handles on either side and runs as fast as they can for 50 meters, then dive head first on their board
  • There are four legs of the race, called heats
  • Some terms for skeleton are...
  1. Loading- the action of diving on the board
  2. G-Force - the gravitational force that holds the rider and the board to the track when going around a turn
  3. Line- the precise path of the sled, also called optimum trajectory
  • Here are some equipment used during a skeleton run...
  1. There are NO brakes.
  2. Front and back bumpers absorb shock and protect the riders from the wall
  3. Gloves are used for protection
  4. Handles are used to give the riders something to push off of in the beginning of the race, usually covered in soft material
  5. All players MUST wear a helmet. Helmets are made of hard plastic with a chin guard and a visor
  6. Racing suits must be worn, made of elastic fabric and has elbow padding
  7. Shoes are made from synthetic materials and have spikes on the bottom
  8. And, of course, the skeleton sled

-the prone skeleton position, arms behind your back wtih your hands together, legs together, and feet pointed, makes it the most aerodynamic

-the slider wears a very tight suit to reduce air resistance
-the helmets that the sliders wear create the most air resistance
-sliders run down 50m of ice, using spiked shoes, to gain momentum for the rest of the run
-the slider's sleds have steel rods on the bottom, which create very little friction,so they can slide very easily on the ice
-sliders shift their weight slightly to one side to turn, if the slider shifts thier weight too much they could lose up to 5 mph of speed
-the record speed for a skeleton run is 55.45 seconds, set by Germany's Marion Trott
-the average skeleton run speed is 35-40 meters per second
